The Yankees split the doubleheader after losing the early game 8-2. Chisholm’s homer off Evan Phillips was his 14th of the year. He was 2-for-7 in the doubleheader, and he’s hitting a steady .224/.302/.403 for the year. His OPS really hasn’t budged from that .690-.720 neighborhood for two months now, but one imagines he’ll be good for another hot streak at some point. Good news. Carroll was removed from Sunday’s game after going 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. If he needs Monday off, Jorge Barrosa will probably get a start in the outfield. Casey Mize was dealing with groin tightness when he exited Sunday’s game after taking a comebacker off his wrist and is set to undergo tests. The wrist was also a factor in his departure, but it’s already doing better. The Tigers are more concerned about the leg issue. Mize has already twice served IL stints due to groin problems this season. If he’s forced there again, Keider Montero could reenter the rotation. Despite giving up a solo homer to Riley Greene, Ryan Zeferjahn recorded his third save Sunday against the Tigers. The Angels bypassed Kyle Yates today after his blown save and loss on Friday. That left Zeferjahn for the ninth after Chase Silseth and Sam Bachman set him up with scoreless innings. Zeferjahn gave up the homer to start the inning, making it a one-run game, but he retired the remaining three batters he faced. He’s now gone five straight appearances without allowing a walk, which is pretty big. He’d walked 31 in 40 2/3 innings previously. If he continues to stay away from the free passes, he might be a decent enough closer for the Angels. However, his name has already started coming up in trade rumors as the Halos prepare to sell at the deadline. Ty France had a grand slam in the eighth and a solo homer in the ninth in the Padres’ 19-2 drubbing of the Royals on Sunday. The Padres scored 11 times in the final two innings, with the last six runs coming off position player Tyler Tolbert in the ninth. France’s slam came off Lucas Erceg in the eighth. It was his second career slam. He’d been without one in 78 career plate appearances with the bases loaded coming into the season, but he’s had two in 11 chances this year. He also now has three two-homer games this year after racking up just two in his first seven seasons. He mostly just started against lefties initially, but it’s now been a month since he was left out of the Padres’ lineup as a healthy scratch. He’s batting .275/.335/.537 in 243 plate appearances. Hunter Goodman homered three times, but the Rockies fell to the Reds on Sunday by a 9-6 score. Goodman has been the subject of trade rumors as of late, and this certainly didn’t hurt his stock if he truly is available. The three roundtrippers bring him up to 30 on the season, and he was able to plate five so his RBI total improves to 56. Goodman was a breakout star last year, but he’s been even better in 2026 with those aforementioned totals and an .886 OPS to go with them. He’s probably staying in Colorado — why on Earth they would trade him is anyone’s guess — but Goodman has the type of power that will play in whatever park he lands in. Shota Imanaga didn’t give up a run in his seven innings of work to lead the Cubs to a 10-1 rout of the Twins on Sunday. Imanaga didn’t have to be at his best with Zebby Matthews giving up a couple handful of runs, but he certainly was close to it. The southpaw scattered six hits and a walk, and he was able to strike out four. He generated nine swings-and-misses, and just seven balls hit off Imanaga registered as hard contact. Imanaga will take a 3.91 ERA into a scheduled start Saturday against the Pirates. Nolan McLean tossed six scoreless innings and got the win in the Mets’ 6-1 victory over the Phillies on Sunday. McLean gave up two hits, walked two and struck out 10. He improved to 7-6 with the win. McLean had been pitching well in his last three starts entering Sunday with only two runs allowed in 18 innings with 19 strikeouts. Against the Phillies, he was dominant with 10 strikeouts and only four baserunners allowed. McLean has a 3.34 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Dodgers at home next weekend. William Contreras hit a walk-off three-run homer to give the Brewers a 3-1 win over the Marlins on Sunday. With the Brew Crew trailing 1-0, Contreras changed that in a hurry with a three-run homer off Pete Fairbanks to give Milwaukee the victory in the series finale. It’s just the 10th homer of the season for the 28-year-old — who otherwise has put together a solid season — and he’s now driven in 57 runs in 98 games. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Contreras starts seeing more balls going over the fence over the summer months, but in the meantime, at least he contributes in the average category as seen in his .280 mark. Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched his first MLB regular-season complete game as the Dodgers bested the Yankees 8-2 in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader. Yamamoto, who did throw two complete games in the postseason last year, allowed four hits, walked none and struck out seven in a 102-pitch masterpiece. He gave up a homer to Trent Grisham in the fourth. The other run came in the eighth after center fielder Andy Pages lost Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s flyball in the sun for a double, and Anthony Volpe followed with an RBI single. Yamamoto is the first pitcher to throw a complete game against the Yankees since Sandy Alcantara on Aug. 12, 2023. He’ll take a 10-6 record and a 2.78 ERA into his next outing against the Mets.
